Rank Structure

About Rank

The Naval Gaming rank system creates incentives for people to work together and grow Naval Gaming. Ranking up is designed to be fun and meaningful, creating a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Line Officers

Line officers form the backbone of our naval forces, commanding vessels and leading operations at sea. Advancement is competitive among peers but also depends on the advancement of junior and senior officers—you must help others get promoted to advance yourself.

Flag Officers

Flag officers represent an aristocratic elite. Entry into the flag ranks requires membership in the exclusive Admiralty Club. After promotion to Commodore, advancement follows the same cooperative pattern as line officers.

Rank System Factors

Promotion Points
Officers earn promotion points through participation in naval operations. Each participant in an operation earns a point, and the operation commander earns a point for each participant. And EVERYONE earns DOUBLE points when a flag officer is commanding an operation.
Percentile Score
Your score represents your performance relative to peers at the same rank. A higher score indicates superior performance compared to officers of equal rank.
Time in Rank
Officers must serve a minimum period at each rank before becoming eligible for promotion. This ensures adequate experience at each level of command.
Open Billet
Promotion requires an available position at the next rank. The billeting system is explained in detail below.

Billeting System

Rank shall not be gained by the mere hoarding of points, lest all officers find themselves promoted without merit or distinction.

The billeting system preserves order within the service. Each rank contains a fixed number of billets, and no promotion occurs until a berth opens in the next rank.

Billets are allotted by rule: senior ranks (Lieutenant Commander and above) hold but half the number of billets as the rank beneath, while junior ranks maintain equal numbers, ensuring orderly advancement. Midshipmen remain without limit, as all must begin their service there.

Thus advancement depends upon the progress of others. A 2nd Lieutenant gains when 3rd Lieutenants rise, and again when 1st Lieutenants advance. Advancement in this navy is a common enterprise, not a solitary climb.
