Sound

The sound starts the first time you press a key, click or tap: browsers keep a page silent until then. Turn it on or off, and set the volume, in the pause menu (Esc, or ❚❚ on a touch screen). The game remembers your choice in this browser.

You hear two things, the guns and the sea. Nothing is recorded: both are made as they play, from what makes them at sea.

The guns

You hear from where the camera is. A gun to the right of the view is on your right, and a broadside close by spreads along the ship's whole side. Far off, a gun is quieter, and the air has taken its edge: a close broadside cracks and booms, a distant one rumbles. Each gun's report also comes back off the sea a moment later, and rolls on across the open water.

Sound travels at 343 metres a second, so you see a distant broadside's flash and smoke before you hear it. The gap tells you the range: about three seconds is a kilometre.

The sea

The sea follows the weather. In light air it only laps. As the wind rises, crests break around you, the swell grows longer, and the ship slaps into each sea.

Nothing sounds while the game is paused or while the tab is hidden.
