The World Gets a Harbour

The sim moved into a home of its own: Quarterdeck became one site, with the world at /world/ and a community site around it, at qd.navalgaming.com.

One site, two halves

Until now the sim stood alone. Today it was joined to a community site, forked from an older one and cut down to what Quarterdeck needs: accounts, dossiers, ranks and promotions, and the admin behind them. The sim's whole history came along with it.

The home page now describes the sim and has a Set sail button straight into the world, plus sign-up and sign-in for visitors. A WORLD link sits in the nav for everyone.

Clearing the decks

The site came with a lot of cargo from its old life, and most of it went over the side: the old password login and captcha, a map and its ports, battle records, voyages, clans, portraits, outside chat and patron integrations, and the content of the old player guide. More than seventy unused database tables went with them. What remains is sign-in, the dossier, ranks and the admin.

One rule changed with it. New members now start as Citizens and stay there until an admin promotes them.

Fixes

  • A new account no longer counts as having held its rank since 1970, which had let every new member pass the time-in-rank check for promotion.
  • A handful of admin pages that pointed at removed features were tidied up.

The name in the header

The header title tried on several typefaces before settling on IM Fell, with a Caslon capital Q.
